How to Draw a Cartoon Kangaroo
The kangaroo is one of Australia’s numerous iconic beasts. Like the platypus and other marsupials, European scientists didn’t believe the kangaroo was real when explorers first landed on the world’s largest island—they thought it was a hoax!
What is a marsupial?
Marsupials are mammals that carry their infants in a suitcase. Kangaroos and smaller kangaroos have unique forms of locomotion in the animal kingdom. Using their big feet and powerful legs, they get up and flinch. The tail is often employed as a “third leg,” supporting the animal’s weight as it counts and balances. In Australia, images of kangaroos can be found almost everywhere, including on the Australian coat of arms, coins, sports team mascots, and airline logos.
Kangaroos also adorn children’s clothing, accessories, and toys worldwide. In popular culture, kangaroos have been featured in such television series as The Wild Thorn berry and the movie Kangaroo Jack. Sure friend! This step-by-step drawing guide is a natural beauty and makes drawing your kangaroo easier than ever. You will require a pencil, a writing sheet, and an eraser. You can also color your finished image.

Step-by-step instructions for drawing a cartoon kangaroo
Step 1
Start by drawing two shapes: a circle to form the head and an irregular, rounded bean shape to form the body. Notice that the forms do not touch.
Step 2
Connect the builds using two curved pipes, forming the neck. Extend two curved lines from the bottom and back of the bean shape that converge and meet at a rounded point. This forms the thick, muscular tail of the kangaroo.
Step 3
Erase the guidelines left by the original shapes.
Step 4
Draw the arms of the kangaroo. For the near feeder, use a long, curved line. The line should go out of the figure, forming the shoulder and upper arm, and then back in, forming the lower arm. Fold the line back on itself, almost connecting it with its opposite end. For the far feeder, use a “U” shaped line to have the lower cape.
step 5
Draw the legs. For each leg, use a long line to outline the front of the leg and the top of the foot, then fold it in on itself. Use a sharp, curved line to determine the toes.
Step 6
Using a series of curved lines, detail the face. Outline the muzzle, cheek, and lower jaw.
step 7
Erase the guidelines for the head, arms, and legs. Erase a part of the head to make room for the next step.
step 8
Using a series of short, curved lines, enclose a strand of hair on top of the head. Let the lines meet at the points. Next, draw the long ears. Extend two curved lines for each ear, allowing the lines to meet at sharp points. Then detail the ear by drawing another curved line through it.
step 9
Detail the face. Draw the nose in the shape of a boomerang, erasing the guidelines as needed. Draw an oval within an oval to create the eye. Inside the smaller oval, draw a circle and shade around it to form the pupil. Let a curved line above the eye indicate the eyebrow. Differentiate the toes by drawing short, curved lines on the front legs and use two curved lines to indicate the shape of the famous bag.
