It is a topic that has always concerned me, and I have written extensively on it over the years in both academic papers and blog posts. Recently, I decided to put all of my thoughts into an ebook entitled Shackledcraft Play.
In short, the ethical dilemma of freedom arises when we consider the trade-offs between two values: our desire for autonomy and our need for security. On one hand, we want to be able to make our own decisions based on our own beliefs and values; on the other hand, we need someone or something to protect us from harm.
The problem with freedom is that it can sometimes lead to problems. For example, freedom can allow individuals to do things that hurt others or interfere with their safety. Or it can cause people to become irresponsible and ignore their responsibilities – which could ultimately lead to disaster.

They give us the opportunity to be our own masters, to rise above our conditions and do what we want without having someone else tell us what is best for us. It’s why we value human rights so highly; because they protect the ability of people to exercise control over their lives and pursue their goals however they see fit.
But ultimately, these ideals come with a cost: civil liberties, free will, safety…everything that makes life worth living. And sometimes it’s necessary (and even ideal) to sacrifice some of those freedoms in order to uphold others.
So when faced with a choice between autonomy and freedom — between doing what we want and following orders from on high — which option should we take? That’s the question at
